2030 GOALS
The gender inequality in the video game industry is a consequence of the gender inequality in the audience of male and female students studying to design and develop video games. As with other STEM disciplines, girls perceive video game development as too ‘masculine’, suffer harassment in gaming environments and lack sufficient knowledge of the new careers that skills in the video game industry can open up
Project Objective
To make the gaming sector more inclusive, NuGamers aims to innovate the curricula and orientation activities that gaming education centres promote, so that courses can attract more female students and show them the employment possibilities of this field of study.
Activities and Results
NuGamers aims to achieve this by training professionals who design orientation activities and curricula in gaming education centres.
By providing them with resources and guidelines dedicated to gender inclusion (fact sheets on gender bias in gaming education and how to prevent and overcome it, methodological manual and teaching kits), the proposed activities will thus be able to attract new female students precisely at the time when they are choosing their educational and professional future.
Furthermore, to design methodologies and manuals that best meet the needs of female students, NuGamers research activities include the involvement of game designers and game developers through focus groups, co-design workshops and experimentation activities.
Women in Gaming Factsheet
“Women in Gaming” shares insightful findings on the role of women in the gaming industry, highlighting both their contributions and the challenges they face. It aims to offer a comprehensive look at gender equality within the gaming sector, particularly in game education and professional environments. Through interviews and workshops with students, teachers, and industry professionals, the factsheet explores motivators, obstacles, and solutions that can help increase female participation in this traditionally male-dominated field.
