The gender inequality in the video game industry is a consequence of the gender inequality in the audience of male and female students studying to design and develop video games. As with other STEM disciplines, girls perceive video game development as too ‘masculine’, suffer harassment in gaming environments and lack sufficient knowledge of the new careers that skills in the video game industry can open up

Project Objective
To make the gaming sector more inclusive, NuGamers aims to innovate the curricula and orientation activities that gaming education centres promote, so that courses can attract more female students and show them the employment possibilities of this field of study.
Resources developed
NuGamers pursues this goal by training the professionals who design guidance activities and curricula in gaming education centres. To develop methodologies and tools that best address the needs of female students, the project’s research activities involved game designers and game developers through focus groups, co-design workshops, and testing activities.
The first output of the project was the Women in Gaming Fact Sheet, an informational resource addressing gender bias in game education and outlining ways to prevent and overcome it. This was followed by the development of a methodological handbook and an educational toolkit designed to create activities capable of attracting more female students to gaming at the moment they make decisions about their educational and professional futures.
