At the Mole in Ancona, as part of the sixth edition of the festival art+b=love (?), staged from Feb. 10-20, 2022, Sineglossa brings the research of artist and interaction designer Giulia Tomasello to Italy for the first time.

BIOFILIE, this is the title of the exhibition, talks about taboos on women’s intimate health, unconventional bras for nonconforming bodies, feminist performance practices, and self-made kits to cure vaginal infections with bacteria.

A public space dedicated to women’s empowerment, claiming a reappropriation of the body and its healing processes by women themselves through the practices of design, biotechnology and biohacking.

  • ALMA, an interdisciplinary pathway that through technology, design and anthropology, designs tools to radically and culturally change women’s intimate health care, with the goal of deconstructing the“culture of silence that pervades today’s society, enabling the affirmation of an open and nonjudgmental discourse on women’s intimate health“. Combining diy – do it yourself techniques – with which to cultivate vaginal bacteria to self-cure vaginal infections, with workshops with women from around the world to listen to their experiences and difficulties, a participatory methodology was developed, to design solutions for women’s intimate health care.
  • Rethinking the Bra, a community of women who want to develop a completely new type of textile structure, using 3D knitting technology to create the perfect bra without the traditional underwire structure. The bra is a garment that is worn daily by most women and has always had a metal underwire structure that causes considerable discomfort and is the source of, for example, shoulder pain, headaches, rashes, and difficulty breathing. Rethinking the Bra redesigns the way the bra embraces the female body, putting women back at the center of the design process and innovating materials.
  • TNUC e Nessunə esclusə return performative experiences that show how knowledge sharing through feminist actions must move out of the laboratories and reach out to men and women in the office, on the street and at home. TNUC is an attempt to reformulate and restate some of the lost meaning behind the word “Cunt” by researching the history, etymology, social and cultural interpretations of the word. Nessunə esclusə is an artistic and social project that aims to examine, analyze and bring out everything related to gender issues (identity, violence, stereotypes and discrimination related to sexual orientation). Nessunə esclusə makes places for sharing and artistic creation where people rediscover the power of their bodies and their own expression.
  • Future Flora, the winning project of the 2018 STARTS Prize, is a kit that allows you to treat vaginal infections by growing bacteria at home as easily as wearing an external tampon. Combining the latest scientific findings on the role of the microbiome on human health and traditional healing methods such as yogurt tampons or the practice of vaginal seeding, the kit is as unobtrusive as it is explosive in terms of social and cultural impact.
