What you find here

“In Appennino” tests and codifies a methodology inspired by the values of the New European Bauhaus to rethink local development strategies in rural and mountain areas. Through an art- and community-based participatory process in the Bolognese Apennines, the project mobilises residents, involves them in a Community Editorial Committee, and works alongside artists-in-residence to transform places, stories, and visions into a digital artistic publication and a methodological handbook for those working on place regeneration.

The phases

  • Community engagement: a group of around 30 people is formed, representative in terms of gender, generations, and background, with attention to vulnerable people and new citizens.
  • Community editorial board: five facilitated meetings led by anthropologists, inspired by the NEB Toolbox, with writing and drawing workshops led by the artists.
  • Artistic residency: a writer and an illustrator take part in the meetings, meet local stakeholders, and run storytelling workshops.
  • Production: a digital artistic publication (itineraries, places, and stories that emerged) is produced, and a methodological handbook is drafted (steps, tools, and operational recommendations).

The publication

At the end of the project, a digital artistic publication was created—with texts and images narrating itineraries, places, and visions co-produced with the community—together with a methodological handbook on an art & community-based approach to local development in line with NEB values (beauty, sustainability, inclusion).
