What it’s about
On Friday 13 November at 6 pm, at the Biblioteca Planettiana, Nonturismo Jesi gets under way: the process that will lead in 2027 to a non-tourism guide to Jesi, a new volume in the Nonturismo series published by Ediciclo and edited by the writer Wu Ming 2. It is part of “Officina della Cultura e del Gusto”, the project submitted by the Comune di Jesi to Anci, the National Association of Italian Municipalities, and co-funded by the Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri – Dipartimento per le Politiche Giovanili e il Servizio Civile Universale through the Fondo per le Politiche Giovanili 2023. In Jesi, Sineglossa is also running Cara Città, the urban, cultural and social regeneration project in the Prato district promoted by the Comune di Jesi together with many local organisations.
The first event is a workshop open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Jesi, on 13 November at 6 pm. During the meeting we will also open the call to join the community editorial teams that will write the guide. Entry is free, with mandatory booking on Eventbrite.
How the workshop works
Every Nonturismo guide has a theme, the spirit of the place: a trait of the territory that the people who live there recognise as their own, and which becomes the common thread running through the guide’s itineraries. In the Emilian Apennines it was being “brigoso”; in Ancona, the image of an amphibious city, poised between land and sea. Jesi’s spirit of the place is still waiting to be found.
Part 1: presentation of the Nonturismo Jesi project, by Sineglossa
Part 2: workshop with Wu Ming 2 to search for the spirit of the place of Jesi.
In the workshop we will try to imagine Jesi as a living creature. What does it feed on? How does it breathe? What flows through its veins? What keeps it healthy, and what are its illnesses? Everyone will draw their own creature and describe it to their group; from the drawings and conversations, the images will emerge from which the guide’s theme will take shape. No writing or drawing skills are needed.
What community editorial teams are
All Nonturismo guides are created by community editorial teams: workshops open to diverse groups of residents, who meet to tell the story of their town, choose places and build itineraries together. In Jesi, the teams will be coordinated by Allegra De Mandato and supported by Wu Ming 2, who will edit the guide. People with a specific perspective, such as those working in history, botany, photography or illustration, will also be able to join the meetings, helping the group read the territory from different points of view.
The call to take part opens on 13 November, during the workshop, and you can apply by 24 November.
Who leads the workshop
Wu Ming 2 has been part of the Wu Ming collective since its beginnings, a band of storytellers based in Bologna. Their first novel, Q, published in 1999 under the pseudonym Luther Blissett, has been translated into fifteen languages.
Since then, the collective has published eight co-written novels and two short story collections, as well as essays, comics and plays, and the screenplay for the film Lavorare con lentezza, directed by Guido Chiesa. Wu Ming 2 is the author of “solo” novels (Guerra agli Umani, Timira and Mensaleri), reportage on walks and trails, musical storytelling (Razza Partigiana), circus shows (L’uomo calamita), documentaries (La generazione perduta), archive films (51, L’uomo con la lanterna, Il Varco) and songs.
All Wu Ming/Luther Blissett books are published under a licence that allows them to be reproduced for non-commercial purposes.
