The Free University of Bozen\/Bolzano, in collaboration with Sineglossa, opens 2 doctoral fellowship positions to explore the relationship between art and artificial intelligence.<\/span><\/p>

Human creativity and Machine Learning to raise awareness of AI<\/h3>

Through interdisciplinary research at the frontiers between human creativity and machine learning, the goal of doctoral research is to explore new possibilities for artistic expressions conceived in synergistic dialogue with Machine Learning processes. Another goal of the project is to produce critical devices to increase public awareness of AI.<\/span><\/p>

The key research question, then, is “how can we increase awareness and credibility of AI?” for all citizens, regardless of their digital skills, cultural background and idiosyncratic interests. The project addresses this question by combining the scientific method of experimental research with human-computer interaction, the reflective approach of science and technology studies, and the creative practices of critical design. The main outcomes of the project will include ML-based critical design work, academic research and public exhibitions that will contribute to public awareness of AI.<\/span><\/p>

Skills Required: Ideal candidates and applicants have a strong interest in shaping the future of AI with a focus on societal well-being and public empowerment. The project is open to diverse curriculum and expertise: designers and developers with expertise in ML and an interest in critical design approaches to digital literacy, social scientist\u0437 with an interest in studying future societies or individuals, trainers with an intention to understand and explain how AI works to the general public. The project requires strong communication skills, empathy and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team.<\/span><\/p>

The ambitious goal of I_C&C is to extend research on end-user development (EUD) to the application of AI in artistic practices. The end result includes the design of an educational platform that presents algorithms as creative material, using a language that can be easily understood by artists and designers to mediate the complexity of AI. For example, the artist could generate artwork by modifying a training dataset or the parameters of a machine learning model. Alternatively, it could use AI to explore new synergies between humans and algorithms as co-authors of artworks. In these scenarios, EUD requires the definition of original metaphors that can build bridges between creativity and computation, enabling artists and designers to understand how AI artifacts work and to include them among their creative practices.<\/span><\/p>

Required Skills: The ideal candidate or applicant has a working knowledge of ML algorithms and interface design skills. Artistic skills (or an interest in the arts) are desirable, as they will work collaboratively with artists, social scientists and designers. However, the project is open to diverse curriculum and expertise with a willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team. <\/span><\/p>
