How can tools based on LLMs be integrated into the daily work of curators, librarians, archivists? What ethical and legal constraints need to be considered? Which technical and soft skills are necessary to build real <\/span><b>AI literacy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within organizations?<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting from these very questions, Sineglossa has begun working on generative AI in relation to cultural heritage, bringing together <\/span><b>artistic approach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> scientific experimentation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>co-design with communities of professionals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. AI is understood as a <\/span><b>cognitive environment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in which new knowledge is built, access to heritage is expanded, and new narratives are created.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6922a7d elementor-widget__width-auto elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"6922a7d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"70\" height=\"25\" src=\"https:\/\/sineglossa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Barretta-gialla.svg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-14746\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45991c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"45991c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Academic research and technological transfer \n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e851538 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e851538\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A subsistent part of Sineglossa\u2019s work is placed in between<\/span><b> applied research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>technological transfer. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In collaboration with the University of Turin and with communities of cultural professionals, we are contributing to a research project dedicated to the use of generative AI in the museum sector, with particular attention to <\/span><b>LLM-based chatbots trained on curatorial datasets <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and digitized heritage. We are gathering information on how these systems are designed, fed, and maintained within national cultural institutions; what image of the museum, archive, or library they give back; how they redistribute roles and responsibilities among curatorial, mediation, and IT teams and governance; what ethical, legal, and organizational risks they pose for institutions; and how they might foster <\/span><b>inclusion and diversification of audiences.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of these reflections is presented in an <\/span><b>article <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Simone Natale, Bruno Surace, Enrico Mensa, and Luca Befera (<\/span><b>University of Turin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), recently published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Media &amp; Society<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the core of these processes is the development of <\/span><b>chatbots and conversational assistants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on LLMs trained on selected curatorial and documentary datasets, with the aim to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve <\/span><b>audience engagement <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in an inclusive and personalized way,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create new pathways for accessing archives and collections,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">integrate technological experimentation within a <\/span><b>framework consistent with the institution\u2019s identity, language, and mission.<\/b><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6507406 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6507406\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The development of the chatbot is not the starting point, but the outcome of a shared process structured around several recurring phases.<\/span><\/p><ol><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Clarifying context, audiences, and strategic objectives<\/b><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Putting the collections back at the center<br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with a generative system means going back to the sources: scholarly documentation, archives, catalogues, existing narratives. This often triggers an internal movement of re-listening and re-narration: which voices are dominant, which ones marginal or absent? Which parts of the heritage are currently under-used?<\/span><\/b><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Co-designing role, tone of voice, and user experience<br \/><\/b>Curators, librarians, archivists, and educators become co-authors of the system, co-designing the chatbot\u2019s tone of voice, the scope of its content, its modes of interaction with the public, and its integration with the institution\u2019s physical and digital touchpoints.<\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Developing, testing, and transferring skills<br \/><\/b>We build a functioning prototype tailored to the institution\u2019s constraints; we test it with audiences to gather both qualitative and quantitative feedback; we train the staff so they can use, monitor, and update the tool independently.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64e1db1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"64e1db1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside its research activities, Sineglossa develops <\/span><b>co-design processes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><b>museums and archives <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to explore <\/span><b>generative AI as an instrument for the valorisation of digitized heritage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For this reason Sineglossa also designs <\/span><b>training programmes dedicated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to those working in museums, archives, libraries, and cultural organizations.
