This is the question at the core of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.green-culture.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a training and mentoring program promoted by Legambiente, Circolo del Design, and Fondazione Fitzcarraldo. The initiative is designed to equip cultural institutions with tools, methodologies, and a concrete roadmap towards sustainability. Over 70 Italian cultural organizations took part in the program: foundations, theatres, third-sector entities, performing arts associations, cultural planning agencies.\u00a0 As Sineglossa, we decided to join, convinced that sustainability is not only about environmental practices, but also about fostering an ethical and responsible vision of technology and culture.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The program was structured in three phases:<\/span><\/p><ol><li><b>Training <\/b>(May\u2013June 2024)<b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lectures, case studies, and online discussions to gain updated skills on sustainability and culture.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Monitoring <\/b>(July\u2013December 2024):<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> data collection, use of assessment tools, and analysis of internal practices to measure impacts and sustainability gaps.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Co-design <\/b>(March 2025):<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> site visits and in-person workshops in Turin to turn knowledge into operational roadmaps, working alongside multidisciplinary tutors and the Green Coordinator of the organisation.<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f01595 elementor-widget__width-auto elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"2f01595\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"70\" height=\"25\" src=\"https:\/\/sineglossa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Barretta-gialla.svg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-14746\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4434a6d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4434a6d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Online training <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-25b4d49 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"25b4d49\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <strong>training phase<\/strong>, Sineglossa took part in over 25 hours of lectures and workshops, tackling the ecological transition from different perspectives: scientific, organizational, design-related, and communicative.<\/span><\/p><ul><li><b>Climate crisis and adaptation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Andrea Minutolo, Legambiente)<\/span><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this module outlined the new parameters of environmental sustainability, distinguishing between scientific data and misinformation. Particular attention was given to the analysis of extreme events, human impact, and the role of cultural organizations in mitigating the climate crisis.<\/span><\/li><li><strong>Risks and responsibilities of the cultural sector<\/strong> (Rubina Pinto, Legambiente): the session focused on the vulnerability of tangible and intangible cultural heritage to the effects of climate change and degradation phenomena (landslides, floods, pollution). Since cultural productions inevitably have an impact, assessment tools such as LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), carbon and ecological footprint, ISO 14064, and GRI standards are crucial to measure and mitigate impacts throughout the full life cycle of events and projects.<\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sustainable cultural productions:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this module examined the regulatory framework around <strong>GPP (Green Public Procurement)<\/strong> and <strong>CAM (Criteri Ambientali Minimi <\/strong><\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; Minimum<\/span><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Environmental Criteria), which have required events and festivals to comply with sustainability standards since 2022. Concrete best practices were discussed in areas such as mobility, food &amp; beverage, waste management, communication, and social responsibility, up to the<strong> ISO 20121<\/strong> certification for sustainable event management.<\/span><\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decarbonization roadmap:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> participants learned how to map <strong>internal macro-processes<\/strong> (planning, programming, commercial management), identify <strong>gaps<\/strong>, and set long-term strategies. The decarbonization roadmap was introduced as a dynamic, adaptive document &#8211; aligned with each organization\u2019s strategic plan &#8211; capable of guiding goals, actions, and timelines. <\/span><\/b><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Design for transition<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rossana Bazzano, Circolo del Design): this session presented the shift from a <strong>human-centered<\/strong> to a<strong> planet-centered design<\/strong> approach, using tools derived from<strong> design thinking<\/strong> and <strong>service design.<\/strong> Case studies were showcased to demonstrate how design can drive innovative strategies, reshape processes, and enhance user experience through an ecological lens.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Data storytelling and environmental communication <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Alice Corona, Sheldon Studio; Marco Capelli)<\/span>:<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> two modules explored the role of data and communication. On one hand, the challenge of translating climate data into accessible and emotionally engaging narratives (reader-centered data storytelling) to make climate emergency understandable. On the other, the principles of <\/span>environmental communication<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: credibility, consistency between messages and practices, transparency, prevention of greenwashing risk, and mindful use of different media channels.<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/li><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Green Deal and culture <\/b>(Paola Borrione, Fondazione Santagata)<b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this session deepened the connection between European policies and the cultural sector: Horizon Europe, LIFE, Creative Europe, New European Bauhaus, and their respective funding clusters for innovative projects at the intersection of culture and sustainability. National calls and bank foundations\u2019 programs were also examined, with the aim of guiding cultural organizations towards competitive participation.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-002fbcc elementor-widget__width-auto elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"002fbcc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"70\" height=\"25\" src=\"https:\/\/sineglossa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Barretta-gialla.svg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-14746\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b0d7c92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b0d7c92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Co-design in Turin<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3dc2b71 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3dc2b71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final phase took place in Turin (March 11\u201314, 2025). Here, following the<strong> double diamond model<\/strong> (divergence \u2192 convergence), we worked with Green Coordinator Cristina Carlini and tutors from Legambiente, Circolo del Design, and Fondazione Fitzcarraldo to elaborate an <strong>Operational Plan for the ecological transition<\/strong> to be implemented within our organization. We identified important margins for growth in <strong>systematizing<\/strong> and <strong>measuring<\/strong> <strong>impact<\/strong>. Thanks to the program, we became more aware of some key challenges:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><b>Skills and resources:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ongoing training is needed to make sustainable practices more intentional, structured, and widespread within the team.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Greenwashing vs. storytelling:<\/b><span> sustainability has always been part of the organization\u2019s DNA, but it is rarely communicated, out of fear of inconsistencies. Instead, it needs to be narrated in a transparent and responsible way.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Distributed operational context:<\/b><span> since Sineglossa mostly works in external spaces and with many different partners, its control over energy, logistics, and setups is limited. The challenge is to develop flexible guidelines that can still make an impact in contexts not fully managed by us.<\/span><\/li><li><b>Digital and AI:<\/b><span> the environmental impact of technologies is still underexplored, yet it is a crucial issue for an organization working at the crossroads of culture and innovation.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b291d6b elementor-widget__width-auto elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"b291d6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"70\" height=\"25\" src=\"https:\/\/sineglossa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Barretta-gialla.svg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-14746\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8e66ecf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8e66ecf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The triennal roadmap\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-091b686 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"091b686\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The co-design process in Turin also resulted in a <strong>three-year roadmap that, through five strategic steps <\/strong>&#8211; from drafting internal regulations to systematize already shared sustainable practices, to creating a handbook with operational toolkits and ecological criteria for cultural planning &#8211; <strong>will help us make the organization more ecologically sustainable.<\/strong> This process is not starting from scratch: sustainability is already part of Sineglossa\u2019s DNA, as a cross-cutting theme running through most projects, from urban regeneration to peer-to-peer education.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this context, it also arised the need to adopt <strong>tools capable of measuring and making visible the green impacts<\/strong> that Sineglossa has been working on for years,<strong> using clear indicators integrated into the social balance<\/strong>. This is not only a technical issue, but also a cultural shift &#8211; turning implicit values into practices that can be observed and shared.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, we recognized the opportunity for Sineglossa to play a role of <strong>cultural leadership<\/strong> in sustainability, especially at the intersection of art, technology, and artificial intelligence. Working on the <strong>AI &amp; Green<\/strong> nexus allows us to contribute to shaping new standards for the cultural sector, sparking critical reflections on the impacts, responsibilities, and transformative potential of artistic and technological practices.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This vision has been nourished throughout the program also by exploring and debating key resources and studies, such as:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/algorithmwatch.org\/en\/sustain-magazine-2022?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustain: The Sustainability Issue<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 a collection of articles and analyses on the relationship between sustainability and digital technologies<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a
