EDUS is a European project co-funded by the EU <strong>Erasmus+<\/strong> program and developed by Sineglossa in collaboration with <strong>Aalborg University<\/strong> (Denmark), <strong>IC Geoss<\/strong> (Slovenia), <strong>Cybervolunteers Foundation<\/strong> (Spain), and <strong>Einurd<\/strong> (Iceland). This framework results from the intersection of different expertise and provides a detailed overview of sustainability-related competencies and how to integrate them within <\/span><b>VET (Vocational Education and Training)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programs promoted by the European Commission.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The framework, developed by the project consortium through document analysis, literature review, and focus group interviews with sustainability experts and educators in Iceland, Slovenia, Spain, and Denmark, is designed to teach sustainable development through a <\/span><b>problem-based learning approach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that aims to foster innovative and critical thinking. It combines conceptual frameworks such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/21252030%20Agenda%20for%20Sustainable%20Development%20web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/new-european-bauhaus.europa.eu\/document\/download\/405245f4-6859-4090-b145-1db88f91596d_en?filename=NEB_Compass_V_4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the New European Bauhaus Compass (NEB),<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/repository\/handle\/JRC128040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GreenComp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Furthermore, it outlines learning objectives for <\/span><b>knowledge and skills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at three different levels (<\/span><b>basic, intermediate, and advanced<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), offering VET educators the flexibility to customize the framework based on their students\u2019 needs.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next goal of the EDUS project will be to develop <\/span><b>educational materials and training methodologies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to disseminate sustainability data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The framework is based on a specific definition of sustainability competence, understood as:<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A competence [which] empowers learners to effectively address environmental, social, and economic challenges, to take action that positively contributes to a sustainable development.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is grounded in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edusproject.eu\/news\/posts\/edus-project-redefining-sustainability-in-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the concept of sustainability as defined in the Brundtland Report (1987)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which refers to development that <\/span><b>meets the needs of the present populations without compromising those of the future.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The report emphasizes the needs of the most vulnerable populations and the environmental and technological limits of growth, highlighting how sustainability relies on balancing <\/span><b>economic development, social equity, and environmental protection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to ensure lasting global progress.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this sense, <\/span><b>EDUS aims to develop knowledge, skills, and behaviors in sustainability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to empower students with tools for thinking, planning, and acting toward a more sustainable future, in line with <\/span><b>UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cBy 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ffaf5ef elementor-widget__width-auto elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" The<\/span><b> learning objectives <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are developed both at a specific level in terms of knowledge and skills and at a general level as attitudes, meaning cross-cutting approaches to sustainability that aim at becoming part of students\u2019 lives beyond education, in their future jobs and private lives.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Planet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dimension focuses on the balance between human activities and natural systems, promoting a <\/span><b>responsible use of resources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> given their finite nature. The Planet approach is crucial as it:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helps understand and<\/span><b> reduce the impact of production activities on the environment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Promotes responsibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> toward nature, raising awareness of biodiversity, ecosystems, and climate change;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trains professionals to develop and apply sustainable production models.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>People<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dimension emphasizes <\/span><b>physical and mental well-being<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>social equality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Vocational Education and Training (VET) plays a key role in improving welfare and ensuring inclusive, quality education. This dimension raises <\/span><b>awareness about discrimination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and social inequalities and trains professionals to work in <\/span><b>inclusive and sustainable environments.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Prosperity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dimension is about balancing economic growth and environmental protection, that is to say ensuring long-term prosperity by untying economic development from increasing CO emissions and overexploitation of natural resources.
